Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU)

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), established under the VTU Act of 1994 and operational since April 1998 at “Jnana Sangama,” Belagavi, was founded to unify and streamline engineering and technology education across Karnataka. Today, VTU affiliates more than two hundred institutions, including autonomous colleges, and offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs to lakhs of students. Over the years, the university has developed a robust research ecosystem by recognizing more than 125 research centres across its network of colleges, resulting in a substantial increase in doctoral output, with recent convocations awarding hundreds of Ph.D. degrees annually.

Sri S.G. Balekundri Central Library, VTU

The Sri S. G. Balekundri Central Library & Information Centre at Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, is the university’s academic nerve centre, empowering students, faculty, and researchers with world-class learning resources. Named in honor of the eminent engineer S. G. Balekundri, the library integrates extensive print collections with premier e-resources through the VTU Consortium, offering access to leading databases, journals, and citation tools.

Beyond its role as a repository, the library is a dynamic platform for research and innovation. Open from 24/7 it provides modern study spaces, advanced reference services, and tools for plagiarism detection and scholarly publishing. Through regular training programs, workshops, and digital resource orientation, the library cultivates research skills and supports the university’s innovation ecosystem. By aligning its services with VTU’s academic and entrepreneurial initiatives, the Sri S. G. Balekundri Central Library serves as a strategic partner in advancing education, producing quality research, and nurturing technology-driven solutions.

VTU Consortium

The VTU Consortium, established in 2014-15 to provide a unified platform for accessing high-quality academic and research resources across Karnataka’s engineering colleges. Initially formed to negotiate and subscribe to costly e-journals and databases on behalf of all affiliated institutions, the consortium enabled equitable access to knowledge regardless of an individual college’s size or funding. Over time, it evolved into a centralized digital resource hub, offering collections from noted e-resources publishers and supporting undergraduate education, postgraduate studies, and advanced research across all disciplines of engineering and technology.

As the demands of technical education and research intensified, the VTU Consortium expanded its services from resource sharing to capacity-building initiatives. It began organizing workshops, user-awareness programs, and training sessions for students, faculty, and librarians to enhance effective use of e-resources and to improve research quality. By integrating digital libraries, plagiarism-detection tools, and collaborative platforms, the consortium has positioned itself as an engine of research and innovation within the VTU ecosystem. Today, it continues to strengthen scholarly output, foster innovation, and ensure that every institution under VTU benefits from world-class academic content and knowledge services.
